You're walking down a crowded street.
You see someone fall to the ground, clearly in need of help. But no one stops. Everyone keeps walking, assuming someone else will step in.
This is the bystander effect in action.
The bystander effect is the controversial name given to a social psychological phenomenon in which people do not offer help in an emergency situation when other people are present. They assume someone else will help. The more people, the less likely they are to help.
The bystander effect means people are less likely to take responsibility when others are present.
But what does this have to do with founders and their businesses?
It's easy to assume that someone else has the answers to solve your problems.
Founders have access to endless resources, books, courses advisors at your fingertips. But the more information you consume and the more "experts" you follow — the less likely you’ll be to take decisive action. Too many people waste an eternity chasing the perfect formula for success.
A business stuck in constant research mode will remain on the runway without ever taking off.
